Percussion masterclass by KALANI, the internationally acclaimed percussionist, educator, presenter, the creator of Developmental Community Music (DCM) and TOCA artist

Programme Contents:
1) Kalani will identify and demonstrate a variety of instruments. People will learn about instruments from different countries, how they are held, played, and some rhythms that reflect the musical traditions from those countries. This portion is educational.

2) People will have a chance to try playing instruments themselves. During this portion, Kalani will provide direct instruction and guidance to help people play the instruments and some of the rhythms that he demonstrated. He will also teach some traditional songs from Brazil, Caribbean, and West Africa. This portion is experiential and based around music education.

3) Participants will be invited to create music on their own, using improvisation techniques, such as mirroring, matching, echoing, etc. During this portion, Kalani will provide support and interactive ideas for people to explore music in an informal way. This section is more like a community drum circle and is improvised. They emphasize freedom of expression and peer support as a way to have fun and show community support.
